The Summer Season is Growing in the Greenhouse at Currans Flowers
Summer often has a way of slowing things down a bit, but behind the scenes, our greenhouse is moving full speed ahead. At Currans Flowers in Danvers, Massachusetts, we’re right in that exciting in-between season when spring color is making its final appearance, summer plants are settling in, and fall crops are already getting their moment in the soil.
Just like last season, when pansies, hanging baskets, hydrangeas, and spring planning helped tell the story of the greenhouse, summer brings its own fresh rhythm. Right now, the greenhouse is full of transitions, and that’s part of the fun. While many of us are focused on patios, beach days, backyard cookouts, and long sunny evenings, the Currans team is already looking ahead to mums, fall color, cyclamen, and yes, even Christmas bows.
Fresh Plants for Late Summer Planting
For anyone who’s wondering if they missed the first big planting window of spring, there’s still plenty of time to bring color and life into your garden. The last of our spring crops are finishing up, which means you can find fresh plants for gardens, porch pots, patios, and containers.
This is such a good reminder that gardening doesn’t have to happen all at once. We love the idea of treating summer planting like decorating your home. Sometimes you start with a full refresh in spring, and sometimes you add a few new pieces as the season unfolds. A fresh container by the front door, a few colorful annuals near the walkway, or a bright patio pot can change the mood of your outdoor space.
Summer is also a great time to see what worked, what needs a little boost, and where your garden could use more texture or color. Maybe one corner needs something blooming. Maybe your porch could use a fresh hanging plant. Maybe the backyard table needs a blooming moment that makes dinner outside more special. The greenhouse is still stocked for those upgrades that make summer shine.
Along with outdoor plants, Currans has recently started a new collection of indoor foliage plants. The collection includes customer favorites like ivy, echeveria, peperomia, spider plants, arrowhead plants, Tradescantia (also known as Wandering Dudes), and pothos.
Indoor plants are perfect for summer because they bring that fresh, green feeling inside, even when the weather outside gets hot and humid. They’re also a great option for apartments, offices, dorms, and homes without a big outdoor garden. A pothos trailing from a shelf, a peperomia on a desk, or a spider plant in a bright kitchen window breathes life into a room. We’re also growing indoor begonia plants that will be flowering toward the end of summer, and that timing is just right.
Getting Ready for Fall Color
Even though summer is just getting started, the greenhouse team is already preparing for fall. Soon Currans will begin planting larger mum pots for the fall season. In early July, the rest of the potted fall collection starts going in, including smaller potted mums, purple fountain grass, celosia, ornamental peppers, ornamental cabbage and kale, fall-colored pansies, dusty miller, and gaillardia. You may be heading to pools, beaches, and summer vacations, but growers are always thinking one season ahead.
Fall plants also bring a fun shift in style. Mums give us that classic autumn color. Purple fountain grass adds movement and drama to planters. Ornamental peppers bring unexpected texture. Cabbage and kale add structure. Celosia gives us that bold, flame-like shape that’s made for fall containers. They create the kind of seasonal display that makes a front porch ready for pumpkins, cider, and crisp evenings.
One crop the Currans team is especially excited about this summer is cyclamen. We’re planting 4-inch and 6-inch cyclamen that will be available in late fall or early winter, and these blooms are such a pretty bridge between seasons.
Cyclamen are known for their bright flowers in shades of pink, white, burgundy, and red. They arrive at the perfect time, when fall color is starting to fade and we’re craving something fresh for indoor spaces, gifts, holiday decorating, and winter cheer. Their colors are festive without being limited to one holiday, which makes them easy to enjoy from late fall into the early winter months.
Summer Perennials from New Hampshire
Currans Flowers grows so much right in our own greenhouses, but summer also opens the door for some special partnerships. This season, we’re bringing in an assortment of perennials from a grower in New Hampshire. Because greenhouse space is limited in the spring, Currans typically carries only a smaller selection of perennials early in the year. But as summer arrives and there’s more room, we can bring in summer-flowering perennials to mix alongside the annuals.
That’s great news for those who want plants that can return year after year. Perennials are a great way to build a garden with staying power, while annuals add that full-season color we all love.
Vacation Plant Care Tips
Summer travel is wonderful, but leaving plants behind can be stressful. The good news is that your plants don’t have to suffer while you’re away. If you don’t have someone who can stop by and water, there are still a few ways to help them stay happy.
You can always cross your fingers for rain, but being a little more proactive is usually the better plan. Try placing potted plants in a deep saucer or shallow bucket that can hold water while you’re gone. This gives the plant some reserve to pull from. For a more dependable option, simple irrigation systems can be set up with an inexpensive timer, which helps take watering off your vacation worry list. Before you leave, it also helps to move containers out of the harshest afternoon sun when possible. A little protection can reduce stress and help plants hold moisture longer.
Here is the plant care PSA we all need: remember to fertilize. Whether we’re watering more during a heat wave or Mother Nature is bringing the rain, all that extra water can wash fertilizer away. That means plants may need extra food to keep blooming and growing. We sell a bloom booster that can be used weekly. During stretches with extra rain or extra watering from the hose, you can fertilize again at half the dose. We’re all busy, so the easier the routine, the better. When fertilizing becomes part of your regular rhythm, you’ll see the difference in your plants.
This summer, the greenhouse at Currans Flowers is full of movement. Spring crops are finishing, indoor plants are arriving, begonias are getting ready to bloom, fall crops are being planted, cyclamen are on the way, and holiday prep is already sneaking into the schedule. You might even spot the team making Christmas bows in late summer, which is wild and wonderful in the best greenhouse way. For refreshing your porch, adding houseplants, planning ahead for fall, or just looking for a little summer inspiration, stop on by! There’s always something growing, and this season has plenty to enjoy.
