Spring is Blooming in the Greenhouse at Currans Flowers
If you’ve been counting down the days until color returns to the garden, you’re not alone. Inside the greenhouse at Currans Flowers in Danvers, Massachusetts, spring has been quietly in motion for months. While winter was still holding on outside, our team was already planting, planning, and preparing for the season ahead. Now those early efforts are starting to bloom, and the greenhouse is waking up in the best possible way.
Spring is especially exciting because it’s the moment when months of planning and planting finally start to show results. Many of the crops you’ll see this season were carefully scheduled and started before the previous growing season even ended. Now those plans are turning into real flowers, real color, and a greenhouse that feels alive again.
Spring Starts with Pansies and Planting Season
One of the first signs of spring in our greenhouse is our pansy crop, which we look forward to all year. These cheerful little blossoms are just finishing up now and will be ready as soon as the snow fully clears away. Pansies love cool weather, which makes them the perfect early-season plant to bring color back to your yard.
Behind the scenes, our team has also been busy planting hanging baskets over the past few weeks. We’ve been filling our greenhouse with a mix of summer favorites, including:
These hanging plants will be available at the beginning of May and are always one of the most popular ways to dress up porches, patios, and entryways.
Hydrangeas and Easter Lilies on the Way
Starting this week, we’re also planting all the small potted plants used in our custom planters, along with a wide selection of plants homeowners can use to refresh their gardens and outdoor spaces.
Another exciting moment happening right now is the transformation of our hydrangea crop. Back in early January, these plants arrived looking like little more than pots filled with woody sticks. That’s completely normal for dormant hydrangeas. But with the right care, light, and patience, they begin to wake up.
Now those same plants are starting to show color and will be ready just in time for Easter, alongside our beautiful crop of Easter lilies. These classic spring plants make wonderful seasonal gifts and bright additions to any home.
Mother’s Day Plant Ideas from the Greenhouse
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, many customers start asking what plants make the best gifts. The good news is there are plenty of options depending on the kind of plant lover you’re shopping for.
For moms who enjoy decorating their porch or patio, hanging plants are always a great choice. Our team can help you select the right basket based on how much sunlight their space receives and how large the area is.
We offer options ranging from smaller 10-inch hanging baskets to our signature mixed hangers. These larger baskets feature custom plant combinations we’ve developed over the years for color, balance, and long-lasting blooms.
If the mom in your life prefers plants she can grow year after year, consider a flowering shrub or perennial. Hydrangeas and rose shrubs are especially popular choices and make a lasting addition to the garden.
Working with Growers Across the Region
While we grow a large portion of our plants right here in our greenhouse, we also work with several trusted partners across New England to supplement our spring selection. These partnerships allow us to offer an even wider variety of seasonal plants.
We also receive weekly shipments from Canadian growers who help supply additional spring flowers during the busy season. It’s a collaboration that helps keep our greenhouse full and gives customers more choices as planting season begins.
Spring also brings one of our favorite local traditions. Every year for St. Patrick’s Day, we grow shamrock plants and offer them free to members of the community. It’s something many families look forward to each year and a fun way to celebrate the season together.
Looking Ahead to Late Spring and Summer
Once Mother’s Day passes, the greenhouse will shift into late spring mode. That’s when we start receiving tropical plants from Florida, including customer favorites like hibiscus and mandevillas. These vibrant plants thrive in warm weather and are perfect for adding bold color to patios and decks. We’ll also begin receiving herbs and vegetable plants from one of our specialty growers, giving gardeners everything they need to start their summer herb gardens and backyard vegetable beds.
Visit the Greenhouse and See Spring Unfold
As the weather warms up, our greenhouse becomes a place where you can really see the season changing day by day. New crops arrive, plants begin blooming, and the space fills with color that hints at everything still to come.
If you’re ready to start planning your garden, searching for the perfect Mother’s Day plant, or just want a little reminder that spring is finally here, stop by and take a walk through our greenhouse. At Currans Flowers, we’ve been getting ready for this moment all winter long, and now the blooms are finally ready to share.
